Residential Initiatives

The Academic Residential and Research Initiatives are a partnership that leads the first-year residential curricular experience for students at UO. The initiatives include the network of Academic Residential Communities (ARCs), Residential Communities, Faculty-in-Residence and Faculty Fellows positions, and residential tutoring and advising, and they help support the UO’s first-year live-on requirement.

Our residential initiatives encourage learning, foster a sense of belonging, and reduce barriers between faculty and students.

There are several ways faculty members can become involved in our community, engage with students outside a classroom setting, and learn more about the student experience at UO.

Become a Faculty in the Hall

University Housing is home to two programs that bring faculty into the residence halls, the ‘Faculty in Residence’ program, and the ‘Faculty Fellows’ program. Both programs aim to humanize faculty and reduce the barriers between students and faculty.

Start an ARC or Residential Community

Academic Residential Communities (ARCs) are faculty-led programs of curricular and co-curricular learning located in the Residence Halls. Faculty members can propose residential communities tied to a specific academic field, or they can be interdisciplinary or identity-based.

Join the ARC Council

The Academic Residential Community (ARC) Council serves as an advisory board with a focus on the integration and alignment of academic residential communities and programs with the UO’s student success priorities.
